Nurturing Connections: Staying Close Despite Physical Distance

The final two years of our undergraduate journey were marked by an extraordinary bond as we lived together on Lindenwood campus. We reveled in the luxury of proximity, where sharing both the joys and sorrows of life was as easy as walking into the next room or shouting down the hallway. However, circumstances such as graduation and new life paths led us to be separated for over the past year now. Despite the physical distance, we have managed to maintain a strong connection, thanks to the wonders of technology.
Our friendship has stayed strong through consistent communication and support. Some ways we have found to keep our relationship alive is through:
  • Daily Text Conversations - Living apart has not dampened our spirit of staying connected. We have made it a habit to text each other almost every day. Whether it's sharing updates about our lives or simply discussing random topics, we make sure to keep the communication flowing. This constant contact helps us bridge the physical gap and stay informed about each other's experiences.
  • Quick Phone Chats - Sometimes, texting isn't enough, especially when we need a more immediate connection. In those moments, we rely on quick phone calls to have a chat about what's been bothering us or to share exciting news. The absence of pressure to communicate doesn't hinder our conversations; rather, it enhances the authenticity of our friendship. We both understand the value of being there for each other, even from a distance.
  • Embracing Voice Messages - Voice messages have become our go-to tool for extended conversations. There have been instances where we've exchanged over 20-minute voice messages, rambling about both the trivial and significant aspects of our lives. These audio snippets offer a personal touch, capturing our emotions and expressions that text messages often lack. They have proven invaluable in strengthening our connection.
  • Being There in Good and Difficult Times - One of the remarkable aspects of our friendship is our unwavering support for each other, irrespective of the circumstances. Even with physical separation, we have managed to be there for one another during both good and challenging times. Celebrating successes and comforting each other during setbacks has remained a constant in our relationship. Though face-to-face interaction would add an extra layer of enjoyment, technology has enabled us to provide the emotional support needed.

While it would undoubtedly be more enjoyable to see each other in person more often, we have successfully adapted our friendship. One thing that we have discovered is that friendship is easy, when it is real and both sides put in the same amount of effort.
