Traveling in your 20's: David & his U.S.A. Adventures

Welcome to another week of Worlds Apart Words Together. This week we are introducing a new blog/podcast series: Traveling in your 20's. Lots of young adults have the dream to travel around the world or different countries while they don't have too many responsibilities just yet. In this series, we are and will be inviting people who are traveling or have traveled during their 20's, to share their experiences!

Our first traveler is David. David is one of Leah's younger brothers who started his journey from his home country Australia. He made his way to Los Angeles and will continue to explore the United States for another 7ish months. We had the opportunity to ask him some questions about his journey so far! Go check out his adventures and follow along on his travels on:

Q: For how long have you been traveling? A: I have been traveling for just shy of 3 weeks.

Q: What does your travel look like? What destinations? A: One big circle; or figure 8 to be exact—mostly national parks, camping, and hiking. I started in LA and have worked up and around to center of America. Next, I'm working my way down to Cajun country and up the East Coast before heading to the New England states. I'll head back to the Midwest for Christmas. Afterward, here comes Texas as I work my way West again.

Q: What has been the best destination so far? A: In beauty - a tie for first between Olympic National Park in Washington state and Glacier National Park in Montana. I have to say Olympic National Park takes the cake when it comes to trail and activity variety; especially when it comes to someone traveling by train (without the use of cars).

Q: What made you decide to do this? A: I fell into a time in my life where I didn't have anything tying me down and I happened to have a little bit of savings. I thought to myself, I can use this opportunity to travel, see more of the world, and make some great memories - there's no time like the present. I also have wanted to see more of the US since I moved away back in 2009, so I knew it was the perfect starting point.

Q: Would you do it again? A: Absolutely! There are so many places that I have visited that would feel completely different if I were to experience them at a different time of the year and equally as many places that I won't be able to get to this time around.

Q: What would you do differently and what would you do the same next time? A: Differently... organize travel by car. As long as you have funds for a car, rent one, buy one, or steal one. 😉 You will be able to see 3 times as many places twice as fast. America is car-centered, it is almost necessary; especially if you are on any type of timeframe. Same as this time... easy; be just as spontaneous. No good stories ever come out of things going to plan. Expect things to go wrong, roll with the punches when they do, and smile the entire time.
Q: Tips for future travelers? A: Beauty and adventure can be found in any part of the country at any time of the year. It will not always (or even the majority of the time) be found in the most popular destinations or during the most detailed trips. You will find it where you least expect it. Be open and ready (it will challenge you in ways you didn't know were possible), but those adventures you will look back on with the fondest of memories. Don't be a #karenkamper. 😛
