Embracing Change and Gratitude: A Reflection on 2023 and the Year Ahead

Welcome to our final blog post of 2023! A reflection on the past year and an anticipation of the new one.

The journey of this year has been quite remarkable. Personally, I (Marit) never expected to find myself in the position I am in today. Initially planning to complete my master's degree at Lewis University in the spring of 2024, my trajectory took an unexpected turn. Despite facing rejections from various graduate assistantship positions that were meant to assist with covering my educational expenses, I was pleasantly surprised to be admitted to the program I am currently enrolled in. While I may not entirely align with the teaching methods of this master's program, it is still very interesting and I have definitely learned a lot

Additionally, fortunate moments graced my summer vacation as I spent quality time with my parents and hosted Michael during his visit to the Netherlands. Sharing his future home country with him was a joy, and the time spent together was truly special.

This year also marked the inception of our blog and podcast, a collaborative effort between Leah and myself. Although consistency has been our goal in sharing our thoughts and experiences, there have been moments of quiet due to life's demands. Our motivation isn't driven by fame; instead, we aim to connect with others through relatable thoughts and experiences. We aspire to grow in the future, staying true to ourselves and our schedules, posting when we can.

A brief overview of my Christmas experience includes celebrating with Michael's family, an occasion marked by traditions different from my own. I appreciate their warm welcome during the holiday season and cherish the time spent together. Looking ahead, I hope to celebrate Christmas with my family next year, with the hopeful addition of Michael.

This year, like any other, brought its share of highs and lows, yet I find contentment in my current situation. As I reflect on the past and anticipate the future, I sense ample opportunities for personal growth and development in the coming year. I invite you to join us on this journey, excited for what lies ahead!

2023 was a rollercoaster full of unexpected and expected turns for me (Leah). This past year involved my official retirement from (collegiate) swimming and coping with understanding how my body is adapting from the extreme demands of the sport. During my last ever conference meet, my grandfather passed away. Although this was expected due to his declining health over the recent years, it was still a sad period of time. Through these momentous life experiences, my first year of graduate school wrapped up and in the fall I start my second year.

My Christmas season was insanely busy. I worked full 10 hour days up until the Friday before. The 22nd of December, Hunter and I drove up to his parents house to spend the Christmas weekend with them. On the 26th of December, we raced back down to celebrate a small party with Grandma and some extended family on my dad's side. I worked another week of long days leading into the New Year's Eve, where on the 30th of December my brother and I drove eastward to spend the weekend with my mom's side of the family.

As I reflect on the past year, I understand that 2023 was a challenge for me including life changing moments, long work days, and mental and emotional wear and tear. Moving into 2024, I send that there is potential for great opportunities to take place.

I invite you to join and share us on this journey as we excited for what lies ahead!
